We are the local chapter of Progressive Mass, interested in advancing progressive policies, expanding participation in our democracy, and creating a thriving Brookline. We’ll do this by:
Engaging in statewide issue advocacy
Educating on local electoral politics and supporting candidates
Supporting warrant articles and other local policies and advocacy
Progressive Brookline is currently led by a seven-person board. Per our bylaws, the Board will be elected by the general membership and can have up to nine members. Board members serve staggered terms of up to three years. Currently, the following individuals serve on the board.
Kevin MacKenzie is a Brookline educator and renter who represents Precinct 13 at Brookline's Town Meeting. He came to Brookline first as a student teacher and then stayed to work in the public school system, first as a paraprofessional and currently as a middle school teacher. Brookline faces rising housing costs and ongoing funding challenges that affect residents and public services alike. As a renter and public school educator, Kevin brings firsthand experience with these issues and a commitment to pursuing practical solutions to improve life for all in Brookline
Kevin serves on several committees for the Town of Brookline. He is Chair of the Commission for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Relations, which promotes belonging, supports programming that celebrates the community’s diversity, and advises on policies that affect all residents. He also serves on the Naming Committee, which makes recommendations on the naming of public facilities.
Faye Miller has lived in Brookline since 2022 and has more than a decade of educational and professional experience working in policy and program research and evaluation. Faye holds a Master of Public Affairs degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, where she also served as the President of the Feminist Policy Alliance. A former child care worker, substitute teacher, and avid library user, Faye is passionate about equitable and excellent public education for all children, at all ages.
Dr. Miriam Aschkenasy has lived in Brookline for more than 20 years as a renter, condo owner, and single-family home owner. Both her children attended Hayes and Brookline High School, and she served on the Hayes school PTO and Extended Day board before running for and winning a seat on Town Meeting. She was a Brookline Town Meeting member in Precinct 13 and then served on the Select Board, completing her term in 2024. She is currently the Director of Strategy and Culture at the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University's Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life. CIRCLE is a non-partisan, independent research organization focused on youth civic engagement in the United States. She most recently worked at Harvard University, where she played a critical role in creating, leading, and managing the Institutional Antiracism and Accountability Project at the Harvard Kennedy School. An emergency medicine physician by training and an expert in program operations. She holds a Doctor of Medicine from Tel Aviv University, a Master’s in Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and a Master's in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School.
Alec Lebovitz is a Town Meeting Member in Precinct 8 and a member of the Advisory Committee. He has led the passage of new bylaws and critical warrant articles addressing financial management, public health, and housing affordability. Professionally, he is a policy analyst specializing in state and federal Medicaid policy, focused on strengthening the healthcare safety net through data-driven analysis.
Bob Miller is a Town Meeting Member in Precinct 2 and a member of the Bicycle Advisory Committee. He retired in 2022 after 20 years as a middle school science teacher in Brookline (where he was vice president of the Brookline Educators Union). He is the president of the booster organization for the boys' high school basketball team, where he has volunteered as the scorer for over 20 years. Bob is a co-chair of the Tzedek committee at Temple Sinai and serves on a number of boards, including the board of Climate Action Brookline. Prior to teaching, Bob was a product manager for software and internet companies.
Bob has lived in Brookline since 1982. He is married and has two adult children who went to Devotion School (now Florida Ruffin Ridley) and Brookline High School.
Sarah Moghtader is a Town Meeting Member in Precinct 1 and a School Committee member. She is currently the Vice Chair of the School Committee and is a member of the Finance and Curriculum Subcommittees. At Town Meeting, she was a co-author of the Thriving Youth warrant article.
With 30 years of teaching experience, 15 of which were in Public Schools of Brookline, Sarah is now a Middle School French teacher in Newton. She has served on the professional board for her discipline, the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association. Sarah has presented to World Language teachers at conferences, has led Professional Development Workshops, and was a facilitator for the writing of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 2021 World Language Curriculum Framework.
Margaret Robotham Ofoche serves as a Town Meeting Member in Precinct 3 and as a member of the Advisory Committee.
A product strategist in health data and analytics, her professional experience requires her to vet investments, build cost-benefit analyses, and analyze feedback from customers and colleagues. She is passionate about using these skills to solve problems in the community and encourage better representation of the diversity of Brookline in Town politics, especially among renters and residents under 40.
She believes that the difference between today and change in the community are 1,000 boring meetings that good people need to attend.
